Annodex Association, Committee Meeting, May 28 2009

The meeting opened at 16:30pm, #annodex

In attendance: nessy, johnf, denisc, wiking, j^, doublec

1. Software project updates

denisc reported that he has applied for a small grant to trial arkaiv in a teaching context, and to get some money to have a linode box for 6 months. This would mean being able to set up a public site to stream annotated versions of linux conference talks (starting with FOMS perhaps?). Wiking offered to assist with hosting if funds were not forthcoming.
johnf reported that libkate is now in debian unstable, and that new versions of liboggz and libfishsound have been uploaded. liboggplay is next on the list
nessy reported that she has re-encoded the foms videos with the new ffmpeg2theora and thusnelda support and that it is highly recommended. nessy plans to work on Kate/srt support in June while at open video conf.
j^ reported there are some recent versions of ffmpeg2theora with thusnelda at http://firefogg.org/nightly/, and that firefogg uses it. A new version will be pushed in the next few days to get the changes done shortly before the alpha2 release of thusnelda which will greatly improve quality for static backgrounds. firefogg will have a render api where you can stage a frames and add them one by one and render the result as ogg. j^ also reported that last week he made a gst2ogg gstreamer based commandline encoder with much the same options as ffmpeg2theora.
wiking reported that in the last month he has mainly worked at fixing the zillions of crashing bugs in oggplay as well as working with bbc people (Anu and David Flynn) to implement dirac support into oggplay with the new api of schroedinger.
wiking also reported a recent discussion with kinetik and gmaxwell_ about a new way to handle theora frames, that would avoid using memcpys and with a new api for handling video frames.
nessy reported that doublec mentioned that both YouTube and Dailymotion are now experimenting with/using the HTML5 video tag - Dailymotion with Ogg, but YouTube so far only with mp4. Apparently Google also seems to be experimenting with Ogg for Chrome, increasing the potential for the rise of Theora in the browser.
j^ has tried to contact apple regarding the qt plugin page, as xiphqt is still not listed, but hasn't received a reply so far. j^ has put together a preview and the png and text at http://people.xiph.org/~j/apple/preview/ and http://people.xiph.org/~j/apple/.
Action: nessy will contact Dave Singer about getting the xiphqt information updated on Apple's website.
doublec reported lots of bug fixes and things going into ff 3.5, including much better seeking support with local cache of data, seeking to non-keyframes now displaying the correctly decoded frame, rather than a partial one. a/v sync is better but still not perfect on some platforms.

2. Finances

nessy noted that we're paying our bills for FOMS, and all is in good shape, though there's not much money left. Anyone keen to donate will be welcomed :)

3. Annodex.net website

nessy reported that there is now a new wordpress setup at http://new.annodex.net
johnf suggested from previous discussions that the plan was that we would post howto's faqs and other interesting posts there. He suggested that this could work in two ways:
1. You login to the annodex wordpress and write a post directly putting it in the appropriate categories so it shows up in the right section
2. People write the post in their own blogs and wordpress will be set up to automatically pull in the posts which have the appropriate tags
It was decided that the site should do both.
nessy pointed out two themes being considered:
http://wordpress.org/extend/themes/feed-me-seymour , http://wordpress.org/extend/themes/fusion, http://wordpress.org/extend/themes/shades-of-blue
After some discussion, feed-me-seymour with a colour change was agreed on.
Anyone wanting an account, please register: http://new.annodex.net/wp-login.php?action=register then send an email to johnf to sort out posting permissions.
Action: nessy and johnf to come up with a category strucutre to fit things into
Thanks to johnf for setting it up :)

4. GSoC and other topics

j^ reported that his GSoC student has yet to report on his work.

5. FOMS 2010

nessy requested to have more help with organising FOMS this year.
Action: nessy to send an email to the foms and annodex mailing lists to recruit help.
