About Annodex

Who runs Annodex, what the blog covers, how articles are researched and checked, and how to reach the people who write them.

What this site is

Annodex is a blog, and the line under the logo, Notes for people who make media, is the whole editorial brief. New articles go up when they are ready, and everything we have published stays available in the blog archive.

Annodex began because the straight answers about video editing, captions, podcasting and streaming were scattered across forum threads, comment sections, and messages nobody archived. We decided to write them down properly instead.

What is filed here

  • Video Editing. Cutting, pacing, colour and the workflow habits that keep an edit sane.
  • Captions and Subtitles. Subtitles, transcripts and captions that make video readable for everyone.
  • Podcasting. Recording, editing and publishing spoken audio people actually finish.
  • Stream Setup. Cameras, microphones, software and networks for live broadcasts that hold up.
  • Games. Video games and gaming, from what we play to how games connect to the rest of life.

Nothing gets filed under three headings at once. If a piece does not have an obvious home, that usually means it has not been thought through yet. The busiest sections are video editing, captions and subtitles and podcasting.

Who pays for this

The site pays for itself through a small number of outbound links. It has never been enough to change what gets written, and the day it is, we will say so here.

How an article gets made

We write from notes taken while doing the thing, not from a summary of other summaries. Where we are unsure, the page says so in plain words.

We buy what we write about. It is slower, it is more expensive, and it is the only arrangement that lets us say a thing was not worth it.

The full process, including corrections and commercial links, is set out on the editorial policy page.

What we do not do

We are not the right place for advice tailored to your exact situation. Annodex publishes general guidance, and the difference matters more than it sounds.

Bylines

You can see who wrote what, and you can see everything else they wrote. That is deliberate, because it makes a bad article expensive for the person who wrote it.

Ottilie Varga, Video editor and colourist. Ottilie cut documentaries for a decade before she started writing about editing workflow. She cares about folder structures, proxy files and the boring habits that let an editor think about story instead of storage.

Tariq Bellweather, Audio and podcast producer. Tariq learned audio at a community radio station and now produces interview podcasts. He writes about microphones, rooms and editing speech so that it sounds natural, and he has strong opinions about loudness.

Philippa Brennagh, Captioning and archive lead. Philippa worked as a freelance subtitler for broadcasters and game studios. She writes about captions, transcripts and archives, and she believes good metadata is a form of kindness to your future self.

Telling us we are wrong

Tell us which line is wrong and why, at [email protected] or through the contact page. Small errors are corrected the same week. Anything that changes the advice gets a dated note at the bottom of the article.
